When to Re-Cloth and Re-Cushion Your Pool Table
I've been selling pool tables for 50 years, and one of the biggest surprises to new table owners is learning that a pool table requires maintenance. People buy a beautiful slate table thinking it'll last forever with no upkeep. Then five years later they're calling saying something feels wrong with the bumpers, or the cloth looks worn, and they don't know if they can fix it.
The good news is that a quality slate table can absolutely last a lifetime. The key is knowing when things need attention and taking care of them before they become serious problems.
Signs Your Cloth Needs Replacing
The felt on your table has a lifespan. It's not permanent. Here's what to watch for:
- Pilling and fuzz: Small fibers balling up on the surface. Affects ball roll and table speed.
- Worn spots: Areas along the sides and near pockets that look thinner or shiny.
- Snags and tears: Even small ones indicate the cloth is getting fragile.
- Fading and discoloration: Especially if your game room gets sunlight.
- Stubborn stains: Spots that won't brush out mean the cloth is worn enough to absorb stains.
- Inconsistent ball roll: If the balls roll differently from one side to another, the cloth is the likely culprit.
How Long Does Cloth Last?
This depends on how much you play and how well you maintain it:
- Casual play (couple times a week): 5 to 10 years
- Regular play (several times a week): 3 to 5 years
- Commercial use (bar or pool hall): 1 to 3 years
The best way to extend cloth life is simple: brush the table before and after you play, keep it covered when you're not using it, and don't eat or drink over the table. Chalk dust is the enemy of felt. A simple brush removes most dust and helps the cloth last longer.
Signs Your Cushions (Bumpers) Are Dead
The bumpers are the rubber and synthetic components that run along the rails. When they're failing, you'll notice:
- Weak rebound: Balls don't come back from the rails with authority.
- Inconsistent rebound: Different spots on the rail respond differently.
- Visible hardening: The rubber looks cracked, dried out, or crumbling.
- Age: If your table is over 10 years old and you haven't re-cushioned, it's worth checking.
How Humidity Affects Rubber
The bumper system is sensitive to humidity and temperature swings. A damp basement or uncontrolled environment causes the rubber to soften and degrade faster. If your game room stays in a consistent temperature and humidity range, the bumpers last longer. Kentucky humidity can be tough on them, especially in basements without climate control.
The Re-Cloth Process
When your felt needs replacing, here's what happens:
- We remove the bumpers from the rails
- Remove the old cloth
- Inspect the slate for any debris or damage
- Install new cloth, stretching it properly over the playing surface
- Reattach the bumpers
You get to choose between Championship and Simonis cloth, and we have 29 color options available. Want to change from green to charcoal? This is your chance. The cost runs $400 to $800 depending on the table size and cloth quality.
An old table with new cloth plays like a new table. It's worth doing if you love your table.
The Re-Cushion Process
Re-cushioning is more involved. The old rubber bumpers come off the rails. The rails themselves might need some refinishing. New cushions are installed and carefully adjusted so the rebound is consistent across the entire rail system.
This takes time and expertise. The cost runs $600 to $1,200 depending on the table and the quality of the new bumpers. Combined with a re-cloth, a full re-cloth and re-cushion can run $1,000 to $2,000.
Compare that to buying a new table at $2,500 to $7,000 or more. A table you already know and love, refreshed with new cloth and cushions, is often the smarter investment.
Why Regular Brushing Matters
The single best thing you can do to extend your cloth life is brush your table regularly. A proper pool table brush removes chalk dust and debris in long, one-direction strokes. Do it before and after you play. Takes two minutes.
Chalk dust damages felt over time. It gets ground in, builds up, and causes pilling. Regular brushing prevents this. It's the cheapest maintenance you can do and it makes a real difference.
Keep Your Table Covered
A pool table cover is essential. Dust, sunlight, spills, and accidental damage all happen when the table isn't covered. When you buy a table from us, every package includes a cover in the accessory kit. Use it. Seriously, use it.
