How to Move a Pool Table (Without Destroying It)

Greg Wilson·March 19, 2026·8 min read

I get this question often, especially from people who've owned their table for a few years and life circumstances have changed. A job transfer, a renovation, or just a different game room layout means the table has to move. Then they say something I hear pretty regularly: "Can't I just slide it on furniture dollies?"

The answer is no. Absolutely not. And I'm going to tell you why, because this is one of those situations where doing it wrong costs you thousands of dollars and might make your table unplayable.

Why You Can't Slide or Roll a Slate Table

A slate table can weigh 500 to 700 pounds on an 8-footer. The temptation is to roll it on furniture dollies or furniture sliders and just push it to another room.

Here's what happens: slate is heavy, but it's also brittle. The bumpers, which are attached to the frame under the slate, are held in place by the weight distribution of the table sitting flat and level. If you tilt the table, shift its weight, or apply pressure unevenly, you can crack the slate or damage the rail system underneath.

I've seen people try this. The table looks fine when it's repositioned, but dead spots appear in the rail system. The cushions don't rebound right. Sometimes the crack doesn't show up until weeks later when the stress manifests.

The Proper Disassembly Process

The right way to move a pool table involves taking it apart. There's no shortcut around this.

  1. Remove the bumpers (cushions) from the rails
  2. Remove the pockets
  3. Remove the legs
  4. Separate the slate from the frame
  5. Wrap each piece individually for protection
  6. Transport everything flat and stable
  7. Reassemble in reverse order at the destination
  8. Re-level the entire table

This takes time, tools, and knowledge about which fasteners hold what. It's not a Saturday afternoon DIY project.

What Parts Are Fragile

If you're handling any part of your table, know what's delicate:

  • The slate: It looks tough because it's rock, but it cracks and shatters. Don't drop it, don't stack things on it, and don't assume it's indestructible.
  • The bumpers/cushions: The rubber and synthetic components around the rails can be damaged if flexed or bent improperly.
  • The frame: Often hardwood that dents and scratches easily. The joints where the rails connect can loosen if stressed.
  • The felt: Dust, dirt, and friction during a move can damage the cloth. You may need cleaning or even replacement after a move.

Why Professionals Are Worth It

I know people think, "It's just a pool table, how hard can it be?" But moving a slate table is a specialized job. You need equipment, knowledge, and insurance in case something goes wrong.

When we handle a move, we've done it hundreds of times. We know how to support the slate, how to protect the frame, how to transport everything safely, and how to reassemble and re-level at the destination. After the move, you can play immediately. The table is level, the bumpers are installed right, and everything is tuned.

If you try to DIY it and something goes wrong, you've got a damaged table and no recourse.

What We Charge

At Lexington Billiards and Spas, we handle table moves regularly. The cost depends on distance and complexity, but it's typically in the $300 to $600 range for moving a table within the Lexington area. That includes disassembly, transport, reassembly, and re-leveling.

Free delivery within 50 miles of Lexington is included when you buy a new table from us. If you already own a table and need to move it, we can do that separately.

DIY Risks: The Math

If you absolutely insist on moving the table yourself, understand the risks:

  • Cracking the slate: Repair or replacement runs $800 to $2,000
  • Damaging the bumper system: $400 to $800 to replace
  • Scratching the frame: Cosmetic damage that may not be repairable on premium hardwood tables
  • Misalignment during reassembly: An unplayable table until a professional re-levels it

A professional move costs $300 to $600. The risk of doing it yourself can cost $2,000 or more. The math is simple.

If You Must DIY

If you're determined to move it yourself, at least follow these rules:

  • Remove the bumpers first, always
  • Get at least three strong people
  • Support the slate properly so it doesn't flex
  • Use proper moving equipment, not furniture dollies
  • Transport the slate flat, never on its side
  • Take your time reassembling and get it level before you play

But honestly, don't. Call us. It's worth the peace of mind.
