Hot Tub Troubleshooting: 7 Common Problems and How to Fix Them
After 50 years in this business, I can tell you that 90 percent of hot tub problems have simple fixes. The other 10 percent need a professional. Here's how to know which bucket yours falls into.
1. Water Not Heating
Your thermometer says 85 degrees and your heater should be running, but nothing's happening.
Check these first:
Start with the obvious: Is the heater switch actually on? Sounds silly, but it happens. Then check your thermostat setting. Make sure it's set higher than the current water temperature. If it's set to 104 and your water is 85, the heater should be running.
Feel the heater area. Is it warm? You might hear the heater element cycling even if water isn't getting hot fast. Give it time. If you just turned it on, it might take 4-6 hours to reach temperature from cold.
Check your circulation pump. If water isn't moving through the heater, the element won't heat anything. Run a jet to confirm water is circulating.
Look for a flow switch near the heater. On many spas like American Whirlpool models, a flow switch prevents the heater from running if water isn't moving. Make sure nothing's blocking the flow sensor.
When to call us:
If the heater isn't turning on at all, and the circulation pump is running fine, you might have a bad heater element or a failed thermostat. Those need professional diagnosis. We're factory-authorized for service on all major brands. Call (859) 255-7639, and we can schedule a service visit.
2. Jets Not Working
You turn on the jets and nothing happens. Or some jets work and some don't.
Check these first:
Make sure the pump is running. You should hear it. If it's silent, the pump isn't on. Check your breaker and GFCI outlet.
Some spas have an air lock in the lines. This happens after a drain and refill. Turn the jets on and off a few times. The air should work its way out. It can take 5-10 minutes of cycling.
Check the diverter valve. Most spas with multiple jet zones have a manual valve that directs water to different sections. If you've got some jets working but not others, you probably need to adjust that valve. Look behind your spa or in the equipment area. You'll see a valve handle. Turn it slowly, maybe a quarter turn, and see if it redirects the water.
If it's just one jet not working, check if something's blocking it from the inside. Sometimes a piece of debris gets stuck in a jet nozzle. You can usually unscrew it and clear it.
When to call us:
If all jets are completely dead and you've confirmed the pump is running and the diverter is open, you might have a failed pump or a deeper circulation issue. That needs a professional. We stock pumps and can replace them same-day in most cases. Call us at (859) 255-7639.
3. Cloudy Water
Your water looks like milk instead of clear blue. It could be a few things.
Check these first:
Test your pH and alkalinity. Cloudy water often means one or both are out of balance. pH should be 7.2 to 7.8, alkalinity should be 80 to 120 ppm. If they're off, buy a test kit—we stock them here—and adjust accordingly. Add pH increaser or decreaser as needed, wait an hour, and retest. Most cloudy water clears up in 12-24 hours.
Check your filter. A dirty, clogged filter can't clean the water effectively. If your filter cartridge is more than a year old or hasn't been cleaned in over a month, it might be shot. We carry replacement cartridges for American Whirlpool and Vita Spa models. Clean or replace the filter, run the circulation pump for 24 hours, and you should see improvement.
Look for biofilm. This is a layer of bacteria and organic growth that builds up over time. If your water smells musty or the cloudiness won't clear with chemistry fixes, you've got biofilm. You need to drain and refill. Use a cup of bleach in the empty tub, spray down all surfaces, let it sit 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Refill and balance the water.
When to call us:
If your water is still cloudy after you've balanced the chemistry and cleaned the filter, or if you're seeing persistent green or brown tint, there might be something wrong with the circulation system or the heater. That needs professional attention. We can come out and diagnose it. Call (859) 255-7639.
4. Error Codes on the Display
Your spa is showing a code like FL, HFL, or something else, and you're not sure what it means.
Common codes and what they mean:
FL = Flow issue. The system is detecting a problem with water circulation. Check the diverter valve and make sure jets aren't clogged. Run a quick check to confirm the pump is running.
HFL = High flow. This usually means the pump is working too hard. Check for a clogged filter or a blocked line.
HTR = Heater fault. Usually means the heater has shut down for safety. Could be a flow issue, or the heater itself might be failing.
OHH = Overheat. The water got too hot. This is a safety feature. Let it cool, reset the system, and check your thermostat.
What to do:
Most error codes clear themselves once you fix the underlying problem. If it's a flow issue, clean your filter and check the diverter. If it's heat-related, let the water cool and check your thermostat setting.
Write down the exact code and sequence. If it happens again, write it down again. Patterns help.
When to call us:
If you're seeing the same code repeatedly, or if you can't figure out what's causing it, call us. We can troubleshoot over the phone, or we can come out. Either way, we've got the training and the parts to fix it. (859) 255-7639, Monday through Saturday, 10am to 6pm.
5. Noisy Pump
Your pump sounds like it's grinding or squealing, and it didn't used to.
Check these first:
Most pump noise comes from the bearings wearing out, cavitation, or debris in the pump. First, make sure there's no debris floating around in the water. Drain and refill if you're unsure.
Cavitation is when the pump is sucking air instead of water. Check that the water level is full and that nothing's blocking the intake lines. You should hear a steady hum, not a grinding sound.
If the noise is a squeal, the bearings are probably wearing out. That's not something you fix yourself.
When to call us:
A noisy pump usually means the pump is near the end of its life. You can run it a little longer, but you're on borrowed time. We stock replacement pumps for all major brands. We can come install one, usually within a week. It's better to replace it now than have it fail mid-soak. Call us at (859) 255-7639, and we'll discuss your options.
6. Leaking
Water is pooling around the base of your spa or dripping somewhere.
Check these first:
Is the leak coming from a fitting where pipes connect? Look underneath the spa. You might see moisture or a slow drip at a union fitting. These are designed to be tightened by hand. Turn the fitting clockwise—just a quarter turn—and see if the drip stops. Don't overtighten or you'll damage the fitting.
Is it coming from the pump seal? These seals eventually wear out. The leak will be slow and steady, usually a drop every few seconds. You can run it like that for a while, but the seal will eventually fail completely.
Is the vinyl shell cracked or torn? Look inside the spa. If you see a crack, you've got a bigger problem.
Check all hose connections. Sometimes a hose clamp loosens and creates a slow leak. Tighten the clamp, and you're done.
When to call us:
If the leak is coming from a union fitting and tightening it doesn't help, the fitting seal is probably bad. That's a replacement. If it's a pump seal or a crack in the shell, you need professional service. Call (859) 255-7639. We can come out, identify the exact source, and give you a repair estimate.
7. Tripped Breaker
Your spa was running fine, then the power cut off. You flip the breaker back on, and it trips again immediately.
Check these first:
First, don't keep flipping the breaker. If it's tripping, there's a reason.
GFCI outlets (those are the outlets with the little "Test" and "Reset" buttons) are designed to shut down if they sense an electrical fault. Check if your spa is plugged into a GFCI outlet. If it is, press the "Reset" button. If it holds, you're good. If it trips again, there's moisture somewhere.
Look for visible water or moisture near the electrical connections, the pump, or anywhere moisture could get into the electrical system. Spas create steam and condensation. If moisture is getting into the pump motor or the control box, that's causing the trip.
Check for a wet GFCI outlet. If the outlet feels damp or looks corroded, that's your problem. You might need a new outlet, or the spa might need to be moved away from a moisture source.
When to call us:
If you can't find the source of moisture, or if the breaker keeps tripping after you've reset the GFCI, you've got an electrical issue that needs a professional. Water and electricity don't mix. Don't keep pushing it. Call us at (859) 255-7639. We'll come out and figure out what's happening. It might be a simple fix like a new outlet, or it might be something in the spa itself that needs attention.
A Few Things to Keep on Hand
If you own a hot tub, stock these items so you're not scrambling when something goes wrong:
- Test kit (pH, alkalinity, chlorine or bromine)
- Replacement filter cartridge (specific to your spa model)
- Gasket wrench (for changing cartridges)
- Basic hand tools (wrench set, pliers)
- Flashlight or headlamp
- Spa chemicals (sanitizer, pH increaser/decreaser, shock)
We stock all of these at the showroom. If you're not sure what you need, bring your spa manual or call us and we'll tell you exactly what to get.
The Bottom Line
Most spa problems are fixable if you know what to look for. Test your water regularly, keep your filter clean, and don't ignore warning signs. The sooner you catch a problem, the cheaper it is to fix.
