Hot Tub Sizes: How to Choose the Right Spa for Your Space

Greg Wilson·March 19, 2026·7 min read

One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is picking the wrong size spa. They think "Oh, we're a family of four, so a 4-person spa is perfect." Then a year later they're saying "We really should have gone bigger." Let me walk you through exactly what each size means and who it's actually right for.

2-Person Spas: The Intimate Soaker

Dimensions: Typically 5-6 feet long by 4-5 feet wide, about 2-3 feet deep

Seating capacity: 2 people, sometimes 3 if they're friendly

Weight when filled: 2,000 to 2,500 pounds

What 2-person spas are for: Couples. That's it. If you're a couple without kids, this is perfect. You get jets on multiple zones—usually 15-25 jets—that really focus on your back, feet, and lower back. No compromising on space.

I've had couples tell me they deliberately sized down because they didn't want their grandkids running around in there. Smart move. A 2-person spa is intimate, heats quickly (usually 3-4 hours from cold), and doesn't require as much electricity. Vita Spa makes some beautiful 2-person models that run $3,500 to $4,500.

Space required: You need about 8 feet by 7 feet of clear patio space. That's it.

The real talk: If you think you'll ever want to relax with more than one other person, skip this. You'll regret it.

4-Person Spas: The Sweet Spot

Dimensions: Usually 6-7 feet long by 6 feet wide, about 2.5-3 feet deep

Seating capacity: 4 people comfortably, sometimes 5 if they're okay being a little cozy

Weight when filled: 3,500 to 4,000 pounds

What 4-person spas are for: This is the most popular size we sell. It's big enough that you can actually have friends over or get your whole immediate family in without playing Tetris. It's not so massive that it dominates your entire backyard.

A 4-person American Whirlpool typically has 35-45 jets arranged in zones, so you can have two people focused on back hydrotherapy while two others enjoy foot jets. These run about $5,500 to $7,500 depending on the exact model.

Space required: About 10 feet by 9 feet. Make sure you account for access around all four sides—you need room to walk around, to open the cover fully, and to maintain it.

Who it's perfect for: Couples with kids (once the kids are old enough to sit still), empty nesters who have friends over occasionally, anyone who wants more room than a 2-person but doesn't need a full party vibe.

6-Person Spas: The Social Upgrade

Dimensions: 7-8 feet long by 7 feet wide, about 2.5-3 feet deep

Seating capacity: 6 people, genuinely 6 at a time

Weight when filled: 4,500 to 5,500 pounds

What 6-person spas are for: This is where you start thinking about real entertaining. You can have both sets of grandparents over, or your book club, or just a chill Friday night with some friends. These typically have 50-65 jets in different zones, so there's a lot of variety.

A 6-person American Whirlpool runs in the $6,500 to $8,500 range. You're getting serious hydrotherapy jets plus lounger seats where you can really stretch out.

Space required: About 11 feet by 9 feet minimum. This is getting to the point where it makes a statement in your backyard. You need to think about your deck structure too—we'll check that when you visit.

Weight considerations: Filled weight is around 5,000 pounds. Most decks can handle it if they're built right, but if your deck is 20 years old and was only rated for normal furniture, we need to talk about reinforcement or putting the spa on the patio instead.

Who it's perfect for: People who like to entertain, families with kids and grandkids visiting, anyone who doesn't want to feel crowded when they have company.

8-Person and Larger Spas: The Statement Piece

Dimensions: 8-9 feet long by 8 feet wide, about 2.5-3 feet deep

Seating capacity: 8 people genuinely, or 6 people very comfortably with room to move

Weight when filled: 6,000 to 7,500 pounds

What 8-person spas are for: These aren't just hot tubs anymore. They're resort-quality experiences. You're getting 70-90 jets, multiple therapy zones, loungers, and enough room that people can actually float and stretch.

An 8-person American Whirlpool premium model runs $8,500 to $12,000. But here's the thing: at this size and price, you're making a statement about your backyard. You're saying "This is a destination. Come relax here."

Space required: At minimum, 12 feet by 10 feet. But honestly, to show off what these can do, you want 14 feet by 12 feet so you have walking space and can see it from your patio doors.

Weight and deck structure: This is serious weight. We'll come look at your deck before you buy. Sometimes the best move is to pour a concrete pad and put it there instead. No regrets if you do it right.

Who it's perfect for: People with large families, serious entertainers, anyone building a backyard resort with gazebos and landscaping, people who use it multiple times a week.

Swim Spas: The Hybrid Option

Dimensions: Typically 12-15 feet long by 8 feet wide, about 3-4 feet deep

Capacity: 1-2 swimmers plus 4-6 people in the spa end

Weight when filled: 8,000 to 12,000 pounds depending on size

What swim spas are for: If you want to actually swim but don't have room for a full pool, this is the answer. One end has powerful jets that create a current you swim against. The other end is a full spa with therapy jets.

American Whirlpool and Vita Spa make excellent swim spas. You're looking at $15,000 to $22,000 depending on size and features. The electricity cost is higher (figure $50-80/month), but you get dual functionality.

Space required: You need a significant footprint. 15 feet by 9 feet minimum, and your deck or foundation needs to be seriously solid.

Who it's perfect for: People with the space who want to stay active and relax in the same investment. Anyone with arthritis or mobility issues who wants low-impact exercise. People who use water for recovery (swimmers, runners).

The Space and Placement Decision Tree

Before you fall in love with a size, let's talk about where it actually goes.

Deck or ground? A 2 or 4-person spa can go on a well-built deck. A 6-person might be pushing it. An 8-person? We usually recommend a ground-level concrete pad or extremely reinforced deck. Swim spas, almost always ground level or a patio.

Sun or shade? Don't put it in direct sun all day. Algae grows, chemicals get weird, you're adding water constantly. Dappled shade is ideal. Early morning sun? Fine. All afternoon? Not ideal.

Wind exposure? Kentucky winds can be brutal in winter. If you can position it where trees or your house block the north wind, your heating costs drop and it's more pleasant to use.

View? You want to see it from inside your house. If you can't see it, you'll use it half as much. Position it where you catch it from your kitchen window or living room.

Access? You need access for parts delivery, for service calls, for you to walk around it. Don't tuck it in a corner where you can't get to three sides.

Here's What I'd Recommend

Couple, no kids, limited space: 2-person Vita Spa. $3,500-4,500. Done.

Family of four with kids: 4-person American Whirlpool. $5,500-7,500. You'll get 10-15 years of family memories here.

Family of four who likes to entertain: 6-person American Whirlpool. $6,500-8,500. You'll actually use that extra space, trust me.

Large family or serious entertainers: 8-person American Whirlpool. $8,500-12,000. Yes, it's an investment. You'll use it 200+ days a year.

Anyone wanting to stay active: Swim spa, $15,000-22,000. Different animal, but incredible for long-term health.

Come See Them in Person

Here's the thing about buying a spa: you need to sit in one. You need to feel where the jets hit your back. You need to see if your shoulders fit right or if you need to adjust position. Every body is different.
