The Complete Hot Tub Buying Guide for Kentucky Homeowners

Greg Wilson·March 19, 2026·12 min read

You've decided you want a hot tub. That's great. Now comes the actual decision-making part, and there's more to consider than just "which model do I like?" Let me walk you through the entire process, with Kentucky-specific considerations that matter.

Step 1: Figure Out Your Size

Before you do anything else, size matters. Too small and you'll regret it in two years. Too large and you'll overpay for electricity and waste space. I covered this in detail in another post, but here's the quick version.

How many people will actually use it regularly? Not how many might be around during pool parties, but how many will actually soak together on a Tuesday night?

Who are you if you're using it alone? Some people want to stretch out fully. Others like the coziness of a smaller shell. This affects your choice too.

What space do you actually have? Measure your deck or patio. A 6-person spa needs about 11 feet by 9 feet minimum. An 8-person needs 12 feet by 10 feet minimum. If you're thinking about swim spa territory, you need 15 feet by 9 feet at minimum.

For Kentucky, remember this: you might have 10 people over in summer, but in January at 10pm when it's 30 degrees and dark, you'll probably have 2-4 people using it. Buy for what you'll actually use, not peak capacity.

Good sizes for Kentucky folks:

  • Couple: 2-person ($3,500-4,500)
  • Family of four: 4-person ($5,500-7,500)
  • Family that entertains: 6-person ($6,500-8,500)
  • Anyone wanting lap swimming: Swim spa ($15,000-22,000)

Step 2: Location, Location, Location

Where you put this thing matters more than people think.

Ground-Level vs. Deck

Most people want to put it on their existing deck. That works fine for 2 and 4-person models, sometimes for 6-person. For 8-person or swim spa, we usually recommend a concrete pad at ground level. Why? Weight.

A filled 6-person spa weighs about 5,000 pounds. That's distributed over a small footprint. Your deck might technically handle it, but over 15 years of water weight and seasonal temperature changes, you might have problems. A concrete pad is $1,500 to $3,000, but it's a one-time investment that eliminates any structural concerns.

Before we order your spa, we'll walk around your deck and be honest about whether it can handle the load.

Sun Exposure

Don't put it in full sun all afternoon. In Kentucky summer heat, you'll be adding water constantly because it evaporates, your chemicals get weird, and algae loves the sunlight. The ideal spot gets morning sun (helps with heating) but afternoon shade from trees or your house.

Wind Protection

Kentucky gets real wind, especially in winter. If you can position the spa where your house or trees block the northwest wind, your heating costs drop and it's way more pleasant to use in December.

Proximity to Trees

Yeah, I want it to have some shade, but not directly under a tree. Falling leaves, pollen, debris. Position it where wind brings debris away from it, not into it. And you're going to want to be able to access all four sides for maintenance and service calls.

View from Inside

Here's the truth: if you can't see it from your kitchen window or living room, you'll use it half as much. Position it where you can see it when you're inside the house. You'll be more tempted to go out and use it.

Step 3: Understand Your Electrical Situation

This is critical, and it's where I see the most problems happen.

120V Plug-and-Play Models

Some entry-level spas run on regular household 120V current. You just plug them into an outlet. Sounds easy, right?

Real talk: these heat slowly. A 2-person 120V spa might take 6-8 hours to reach soaking temperature from cold. In summer, fine. In January, you might plug it in on Sunday so it's ready for Friday. Also, 120V models use an enormous amount of electricity. You might need a dedicated circuit just for the plug.

120V is fine for casual seasonal use or if you really just want to test out the spa lifestyle before committing. But most Lexington folks who go with 120V end up upgrading within a year.

240V Hardwired

Everything else runs on 240V. This is what you want if you're serious about actual regular use. The heating is fast (3-4 hours from cold in most models), electricity consumption is reasonable, and you get full feature sets.

Here's what you need: A licensed electrician needs to run a dedicated 240V circuit to your spa location. This isn't something you do yourself. This isn't something a handyman does. You need a licensed electrician because electrical codes in Kentucky require it.

The circuit typically needs 30 to 60 amps depending on the spa. Your electrician will pull a permit, do the work, and get it inspected. This costs $800 to $2,500 depending on how far the spa is from your main panel and what your house wiring looks like.

What Lexington Electricians Need to Know

When you call an electrician, they'll ask about your spa specs. Tell them these things:

  • Voltage (240V)
  • Amperage requirement (we'll tell you the exact number)
  • Distance from the main panel to the spa location
  • Whether you have room in your main panel for a new breaker

Your electrician might also ask about GFCI protection. Most spas require GFCI circuit protection. Some modern spas have it built in. Some don't. We'll handle that conversation when you're at the showroom.

Budget for Electrical Installation

Don't just budget for the spa price. Budget for:

  • Electrical installation: $800-2,500
  • Permit and inspection: Usually $100-300, handled by the electrician
  • Possible main panel upgrade if you don't have capacity: $1,000-3,000 (rare but happens)

When you buy from Lexington Billiards, we'll talk about what you need before we order, so there are no surprises on installation day.

Step 4: Choose Your Brand

I've written a whole post comparing American Whirlpool and Vita Spa, but here's the quick version:

American Whirlpool: Premium build, hydrotherapy-focused, longer lifespan (15+ years), $5,500-12,000 depending on size. Best if you care about long-term durability and therapeutic jet placement.

Vita Spa: Excellent value, modern design, solid quality, 10-12 year lifespan, $3,500-8,000 depending on size. Best if you want to balance quality and budget.

Both are excellent. Both are locally supported by us. Choose based on your budget and what you value.

Step 5: Delivery and Installation

This is where buying local saves you money and stress. Here's what we do:

Free delivery within Lexington: We bring it to you on a trailer. We position it where you want it. You don't pay extra.

Free professional installation: We don't just drop it off. We level it, connect the electrical (if you've had your electrician run the circuit), fill it, test it, and make sure everything works before we leave. We teach you how to operate it. If your electrician hasn't finished the electrical work, we'll coordinate with them.

Water care training: We show you how to test water, add chemicals, maintain pH. We give you a starter kit of chemicals so you're not scrambling to figure out what to buy.

Same-day startup: You can use it the same day.

Compare this to buying online. You get a delivery date 2-3 weeks out, a semi truck drops it in your driveway, and you're scrambling to figure out how to get it positioned, filled, and working.

Step 6: Ongoing Maintenance and Support

Here's the reality: eventually, something will need service. A pump might need replacement. A jet housing might need attention. You'll have questions about water chemistry.

When you buy from us, you get:

  • Same-day parts availability (filters, chemicals, minor components)
  • Factory-authorized service (we're certified for both American Whirlpool and Vita Spa)
  • Phone support from someone who's been doing this 50+ years
  • If you ever want to move the spa to another house, we do that service

When you buy online, you're either learning YouTube tutorials or calling a manufacturer's support line hoping they can help.

Step 7: Chemicals and Maintenance

Once you own it, you need to maintain it. This isn't complicated, but it's real.

Weekly:

  • Test chlorine or bromine levels (we show you how)
  • Test pH
  • Check alkalinity if needed

Monthly:

  • Deep clean filters

As needed:

  • Replace filter cartridges (usually every 3-4 months, roughly $30-40 per replacement)
  • Drain and refill if chemistry gets too far out of balance (annually or as needed)

Budget: Roughly $40-50 per month for chemicals and maintenance supplies. We keep everything in stock.

Step 8: Kentucky Winter Considerations

Lexington winters aren't as brutal as some places, but they're real. Here's what changes:

Freeze protection: All modern spas have freeze protection that keeps the water moving if it gets too cold. Your spa won't freeze. You will, so use it or don't, but the spa is fine.

Heating costs: January through March, your heating costs go up. Budget $45-60 per month during winter months instead of $25-35 in moderate weather. Better insulation (American Whirlpool) helps here.

Cover maintenance: Your cover gets heavier with ice. Don't leave ice sitting on it. Brush it off after snow. A snow-loaded cover is hard on the hinges.

Chemicals in cold: They work a bit differently in cold water. We'll coach you on adjustments when you buy.

Step 9: The Final Decision

Let me break down your decision tree:

Do you have $3,000-5,000 and want a casual spa experience? Vita Spa 2 or 4-person. You'll be happy.

Do you have $5,500-8,000 and want to really use this regularly? American Whirlpool 4-person or Vita Spa 6-person. Depends if hydrotherapy or value matters more.

Do you have 8,000-12,000 and serious deck/patio space? American Whirlpool 6 or 8-person. You're making a statement spa.

Do you want to actually swim? Swim spa, 15,000-22,000. Both American Whirlpool and Vita Spa make excellent ones.

Are you still unsure? Come sit in them. Stop by our showroom at 1431 Leestown Rd, Lexington. We're open Monday-Saturday, 10am-6pm. Sit in different models. Feel the jets. Ask questions. Then make your decision.

The Electrical Setup Checklist

Before your spa arrives, here's what you need done:

  • [ ] Electrician consulted and quoted
  • [ ] Electrical work scheduled and completed
  • [ ] Permit pulled and inspection passed
  • [ ] GFCI protection installed if required
  • [ ] Area cleared and measured (level ground or deck with 1 inch per 10 feet slope for drainage)
  • [ ] Electrical source within 6 feet of spa or new circuit run from panel

When we deliver, we'll verify everything is ready. If it's not, we'll work with you to coordinate.

One More Thing: Why Buy Local

You could buy online and save a couple hundred dollars on the spa itself. But you lose:

  • Free delivery and installation
  • Free water training
  • Same-day parts availability
  • Factory-authorized service
  • A person to call when you have questions
  • The ability to sit in it before buying

Over 10-15 years of ownership, those services save you thousands in coordinating contractors, buying overpriced parts elsewhere, and figuring things out on your own.
